A LITTLE ABOUT ME

I came to this work
the long way around.

I spent two decades in finance, learning how to look at a business carefully and figure out which questions were worth asking. It is a craft, and I love it. But it is not what I am selling here.

What changed things for me was being married to a dentist. Watching her run her practice over the years, I saw how unique each practice really is. Two offices a mile apart can have completely different problems, completely different opportunities, and completely different definitions of success.

The thing nobody could give her, and the thing I started Pareto to give other owners, is patient, careful attention to her practice in particular. The tools we end up building are the wrapper. The thinking is the product.

THE APPROACH

How I think about the work.

They are habits I work at with every owner. When I get them right, the work tends to be useful. I like to be right, but I'm also really good at admitting when I'm not.

01

Client experience

You are not on a roster. We work together at a pace that fits your practice and the rest of your life.

02

Focus on the 20%

In any practice, a handful of things really move the needle. The work is finding which handful, for you.

03

Clarity over complexity

If something I share with you cannot fit on a single page, I have not thought about it carefully enough yet.

04

Intentionality

The goal is not to do more. It is to make sure the things you do are the things you actually meant to do.

THE WORK

A few ways practices end up working with us.

Every engagement starts with a conversation about your practice. What it ends up looking like depends on what we find. The three below are a rough map of where it usually goes.

01
ONGOING

Goal Management

Critical thinking, ongoing.

A custom intelligence layer built around your practice. The targets are set by you. We turn your priorities into clear, practice-specific numbers your team sees every day. Plain enough that you, your team, and your coach can read them without us in the room.

  • Targets defined by the practice
  • Custom KPI views your team actually uses
  • Plain enough to read without us
Best if you have 2+ associates.
02
PROJECT

Project-Based Analysis

Critical thinking, once.

You are about to make a life-changing, expensive decision. We do the critical thinking together and you walk out with an answer you thoroughly understand.

  • Expansion / second location
  • Buy vs. build vs. wait
  • Equipment & tech decisions
Best when the question only comes once.
03
TOOLS

Team Productivity Tools

Critical thinking, built into a tool.

Custom tools built for one specific problem in your practice. A bonus model that finally rewards the right behavior. A treatment-planning aid. Something nobody has built off the shelf because it is shaped exactly to your team.

  • Bonus & comp models
  • Treatment-planning aids
  • Anything that does not exist off the shelf
Only available to existing clients. Best when you have an idea but no time to build it.
IN PRACTICE

A couple of owners I have the privilege of working with.

“With a quick glance, I can confirm if we are on track or off track with our goals. The ease of use and efficiency allow me to direct my focus on what matters most.”

FROM THE DESK

Working notes, not a blog.

These are the things I am currently thinking out loud about. Some of them will seem obvious. Some won't. If any of them sound like your practice, send a note.

Updated when I have something worth saying. No fixed cadence.

Production per provider hour, and why you might need two speedometers

“Production per hour seems like one number. The minute you start tying it to incentives, you might find you actually want two. One for the business, one for the team. And one simple system for putting the team number to work.”

A 10,000 foot view of production goals

“Goals that don't account for working days will be quietly wrong all year. Here's what that means for your practice — and for the people responsible for hitting those numbers.”

Pareto Is Not Designed to Scale

“A friend pointed me to Paul Graham's essay "Do Things That Don't Scale." He was making the point that what I'm building sounds a lot like what Graham describes. For some services, the unscalability isn't a phase you eventually grow out of. It's the point.”

Tell me what's going on.

30 minutes, no pitch, no slides. We talk through what is going on in your practice and I will be honest with you about whether I think I can help. If I cannot, I will try to point you to someone who can.
